This object has the following keywords:
  • remarques - Refers to notes, scribbles, sketches or doodles made by the artist outside the design on a plate to be printed. The practice started as a way of testing the strength of the acid on a plate about to be etched before risking the biting of the image. Remarques were usually burnished away before printing, though occasionally some marginal marks were deliberately left in some printed editions to exploit the collector's desire for rarities. See also "remarque proofs."
