  • art galleries - Refers specifically to establishments in which works of art are displayed for sale. For buildings where works of art are housed and displayed for public benefit, see "art museums."
  • cowboy hats - Wide-brimmed hats with a large soft crown of the type worn by ranch hands in the American West.
  • Pop (fine arts styles) - Refers to the international art and cultural movement that flourished in Britain and America in the 1950s and 1960s. Influenced by Dada, the movement advocated the use of everyday imagery, such as advertisements, signs, and comic strips, executed in the techniques and graphic styles of mass media. The movement respresented a move toward a more objective, immediate art form after the dominance of Abstract Expressionism.
  • service stations - Establishments that primarily sell gasoline, lubricating oils, and other merchandise, such as tires and batteries, for motor vehicles and that often also perform minor repair work. For buildings or parts of buildings where motor vehicles are parked or housed, usually temporarily, use "garages."
  • viewers (observers) - Individuals who view exhibitions or individual works of art or architecture, television programs, or motion pictures. For those who are present at and observe live events, use "spectators." For groups of spectators or viewers, use "audiences."
  • works of art - Refers to works of the fine or decorative arts when their aesthetic or conceptual nature is emphasized; when emphasis is on the works as objects, as in conservation or inventorying, use "art objects." A work of art may exist as one part of a larger object, e.g., a mural painting or a painting on a piece of furniture. When referring to the study or practice of the fine arts or the fine and decorative arts together, use "art."
